ST. PAUL, MINN - The Minnesota Gun Owners Political Action Committee (MNGOPAC) is criticizing House District 28B House Candidate Thomas Trehus for a pattern of dishonesty regarding gun rights issues, a major issue for residents in Southeast Minnesota.
“Minnesotans who care about their constitutional rights as gun owners just can’t trust Thomas Trehus,” said Bryan Strawser, Chair. "Trehus is either a flip-flopping politician or is deliberately misleading the public about where he stands on protecting the rights of law-abiding gun owners."
Strawser pointed to comments made just a few months ago reported in the LaCrosse Tribune where Trehus said "Some of the high-powered rifles [...] I don't see a lot of folks hunting with them around here. I don't think they have a place in civilian life." In the same article, Trehus expressed support for gun restrictions on those placed on the federal no-fly list.
In 2012, Trehus tweeted "I think it's fair to say, the NRA is a sick and twisted organization."
Last month, the Rochester Post-Bulletin reported that "candidates also were asked if they would support tougher restrictions on handguns and assault rifles. None of the candidates — with the exception of one — said they would back stricter laws." The lone supporter of stricter gun laws was identified in the article as District 21B DFL candidate Elise Diesslin.
Trehus was hiding his true beliefs during the debate.
His website vaguely proclaims support for "firearm safety," but refuses to make clear for voters whether he supports gun control measures.
“Usually we see politicians go to great lengths to conceal their anti-gun beliefs from voters, “ added Rob Doar, Political Director. "Thomas Trehus supports some of the most zealous anti-gun politicians in Saint Paul and Washington D.C., and they support him. It's clear to us that Trehus is deliberately hiding his true positions, and will not hesitate to restrict the rights of law-abiding gun owners if he is elected," Doar concluded. "Greg Davids is the clear choice for voters in HD 28B who cares about Second Amendment rights."
